Breed: Brahma
Species: Chicken
Description: Brahmas are the "giants" in the chicken world. In their appearance the Brahma embody a chicken with courage and strength, caused by their size, the massive body and the broad medium high stance. They show lively temperament, a challenging posture and a bold look. Their head shape resembles that of an eagle. "Giant" Brahma are very fully feathered and weather-hard. They enchant with their massive stature, their feathered legs and toes ( clapped legs ). This breed is very calm and trusting. The cocks are majestic, which is why they are called "kings among the chicken breeds".
Dissemination: It is interesting that already in 1872 chicks could be transported from America to England and the Brahmas were transported so far by ship! Queen Victoria of England received 2 cocks and 7 hens from a Mr. Burnham and was delighted with these wonderful animals.
After one could now admire these gigantic and ponderous animals at court, the "Brahma fever" spread rapidly and soon there was hardly a place in England where no Brahmas could be found.
The introduction in Germany was similar to that in England. Again it was a high civil servant who had copies sent to him. Consul P. Geisse in Nuremberg received from his father from Philadelphia! Black and white Columbia coloured Brahmas.
History: The Brahma chicken originally comes from the area of the Brahmaputra River in India, which flows in the Himalayan region and finally flows into the Ganges. It is considered a cross between the Cochin, Malay and Chittagong chicken breeds, which were first recorded as a breed in North America around 1850.
