Description
Long ago the Kesznyéten Landscape Protection Area was in the meeting point of River Sajó and Hungary´s second largest river, the Tisza, which was uncontrolled at that time. River Takta and the Hernád-canal flow into the Sajó nearby, which empties into the Tisza some kilometers far from the former estuary. These rivers supplied people living here with fish and shipping. Due to the many hectares of washland meadows and fields surrounded the village, Kesznyéten was famous for its traditional grazing in the last centuries.
The Landscape Protection Area founded in 1990, which extends over the former flood area of the Tisza. There are groves, willow-beds, meadows and moors on the more than 6000 hectares territory. Its avifauna is very rich, there are more than 200 birdspecies brooding and passing through here. In this Landscape Protection Area the ancient hungarian species like Grey cattle and 'Racka' sheep are bred again.
In the Landscape Protection area described above, the Tiszataj Public Foundation established a visitor´s centre at the Farm Szamárhát, where visitors can get acquainted with the animal stock consisting of native animals (Hungarian grey cattles, long-wooled sheep, domestic buffalos). Additionally, they can receive information on the natural values and the actual sights of interests. Also a study path helps visitors in exploring the surroundings.
