Various stories are circulating about the origin of the North Holland crooked duck and the comparisons with the North Holland white-breasted duck. On the one hand, it is described that the crooked duck originated from the white-breasted duck as a spontaneous mutation. On the other hand, it is written that they are crossed with white-breasted pine and can therefore have the same colors.
In any case, the North Holland white-breasted and crooked ducks were a familiar sight in the wetland polder areas. They can already be seen in paintings by Albert Cuyp.
