Description

Landscape
Until the museum was opened in 1918, the land formed part of the Waterberg estate. This was an estate with an unusual landscape of hills, surprising little nooks, large numbers of beech and pine trees and a farmhouse. After its opening, the museum intervened in the landscape in a number of ways, for example, through the creation of the herb garden and nursery garden. Most of the features of the estate have been retained, however.

...and animals
At various places in the museum you will be able to see animals. The museum tries to offer an impression of the Netherlands’ rare domestic breeds. During your visit you will come across rare breeds of cattle, but also old Dutch breeds of chicken and rabbit.

Herb garden
The herb garden was created in 1927. Throughout the garden you will find small information boards that allow you to see straight away what each plant is and what it was once used for. If you would like to know more, the head gardener will be happy to help you. A selection of plants for blind and visually impaired visitors to touch has been planted in front of the herbarium. The names of these plants can be read on braille boards. You will find five sections: Dye garden, Kitchen garden, Magical garden, Monastery garden and Medicinal garden.

Animals
All the animals in the meadow are rare agricultural domestic breeds. You will come across cows such as the Friesian red and white, the Dutch Belted cow, the Blaarkop, the Baggerbont, the Witrik and the Brandrood, and breeds of sheep including the Drenthe and Veluwe moorland sheep, the Friesian milk sheep and the Zwartbles.

Tram
Since 1996, various old trams have been running in the museum park at the Netherlands Open Air Museum. A long-held ambition of the museum has therefore become a reality. For a number of years the museum had been trying to find a way to make the undulating site more easily accessible, especially for older and disabled visitors.
