Description
Georgia has a reach agricultural biodiversity both in terms of plants, as well domestic animals. There were several international and national programs working on agricultural biodiversity conservation in Georgia, however all of them were focused on the conservation of plant genetic recourses. Local domestic animal breeds are extinct at present due to unregulated crossing. Zemo Khdasheni Conservation Farm (Kakheti, Akhmeta municipality) represents the fist attempt to carry our conservation activities of rare traditional livestock breeds of Georgia as a national heritage.
At present the following breeds are kept at the Conservation Farm of Zemo Khodasheni: Georgian mountain cow (sub-breed: Thush-Khevsuretian); Tushuri (tushetian) sheep; Megruli (megrelian) goat; Kakhuri (kakhetian) pig; Five populations of local hen.
