Description
Argotti Botanic Gardens situated in Floriana, are one of the finest gardens in Malta. The tourists simply love this place for its calm and scenic beauty. For those travelers who seek a place where they can relax and enjoy their moments of leisure in Malta, Argotti Botanic Gardens are the place to be. It is a place free from the daily hustle bustle and hazards of city life. The gardens were a private property of Grand master Pinto who laid them out in the 18th century and bailiff Ignatius de Argotte y Gusman.
The garden served initially as a place to cool down and relax. But later on, the authorities decided that they should now work as an instrument to spread awareness on science. The Argotti Botanical Gardens was, therefore, developed into a botanical garden. Now you find a number of rare plants and herbs in the Argotti Botanical Gardens. You can see trees and plants like Oak to Oleanders, pot plants to cactus and many other varieties. There is also a horticultural arena where different local and foreign plants and seeds are exhibited. An additional attraction to the Argotti Botanical Gardens is an old summerhouse which was built in 1741. But it is open only during the office hours. The tourists are always thrilled to see such an old summerhouse well preserved inside the garden. The Argotti Gardens also hold a variety of water features – fountains, ponds and water towers.
The private section (also open to the public) has a number of both indigenous and foreign plants. There is a small horticultural museum housed in part of the villa exhibiting seeds, plant pressing equipment, gardening maps and records. There is also an exquisite gazebo dating back to 1741, which is open during office hours only.
