Breed: Appenzeller Barthuhn
Species: Chicken
Description: It is a strong chicken with a small rose comb. The throat and earlobes are covered by a feather beard, which protects the chicken well from the cold. Originally, the breed is available in two colours: black and a partridge colour. With beard it is well adapted to cold winters. The partridge-coloured variety is almost extinct. It is strong, cautious and the egg production is low.
Dissemination: In the 1990s, the partridge-coloured blow was almost extinct. In the meantime, the stock has recovered and inbreeding traits have been corrected.
History: The Appenzell Barthuhn was bred from country chicken breeds in the Appenzeller Land in the 1960s.
