Description: The Mallorcan goat (Capra aeagrus hircus) is of native origin that inhabits the mountainous areas of the island of Mallorca (mainly Tramuntana and Llevant) in the wild and with almost no human exploitation. It is a medium-sized goat, the rams of which have larger antlers than the female and a beard. They have a brown-red coat with complementary black markings located on certain regions of their body, which clearly distinguishes them from the other breeds found in Mallorca or the rest of the islands of the Balearic archipelago. It inhabits all the habitats of the Mallorcan mountains, from sea level to the highest peaks (1447 m) and feeds on grasses, shrubs and acorns. It is a polygamous species, with gestation lasting five months and giving birth to a single offspring. Mallorquin female goats spend most of the year alone or in very small groups, male goats use a larger area.
Morphology: It has a thick head, with a subconvex frontonasal line. They always have horns, thick and curled on themselves in males, and smaller and slightly divergent in females. The eyes are small, bright-eyed and with a light amber iris. The ears are large, proportionate to the head, broad and straight, and always in a position stretched above the horizontal. The adult goats show a black tupe, as well as a black beard. They do not present / display nipples. The neck is long, and the body is well proportioned, stretched and slightly gathered from the belly, with the ribs flat and well defined, and a sloping rump, flat and narrow. The tail is low-born, short and triangular in shape, always populated with hair. The breasts are small, globose and with small nipples and located at the bottom. The limbs generally have good aplomb and are strong and well muscled. The pots are strong and black in color. The hair is strong and brown / red with darker areas, almost black, which are formed by a streak that runs from the neck, all the way back to the tail. In males, there is also a black streak that crosses the spine with that of the spine, which goes from leg to leg passing over the cross of the animal. Both males and females also have black limbs from the body, crotch and belly. In the males the forehead and the nose are pigmented of black, coloration that intensifies with the age, whereas the females present / display a black streak that unites the teardrop with the nose.
