The breed had the strongest distribution in the region of Schwäbisch Hall, therefore it was named after it.In 1925 a breeding organisation was founded and the breeding goals were defined. After the standardization of the pig breeding in the 1960s the breed rapidly decreased almost to extinction. Nevertheless some farmers held on to the breed and in 1986 a bredding association for this breed was founded with 17 members.
